Etymology: As primary verbal noun κουρά stands for *κορσά (on he phonetics Schwyzer 285f., Lejeune Traité de phon. 108 n. 3, 119 n. 2); the verb is seen in Hitt. karš-mi `cut off' (IE rather *kérs-mi than *kórs-mi); with t-enlargement Toch. A kärṣt-, B kärst- `cut off, destroy'. Traces of the same verb (with diff. sound-development) show Gr. ἀ-κερσε-κόμης, Κόρσης nickname of a smooth-shaved man (Chrysipp.), κορσός κορμός H., κορσοῦν κείρειν H. with κορσᾶς m.
